LA
MAMINE
La Mamine is a very special place.
The building was constructed during the 17th Century and is an
excellent example of a typical dwelling of the Périgord Noir.
The thick limestone walls give a golden glow and the relatively small
windows and doors keep the heat out during the summer and in during the
winter. The steeply pitched roof is covered with lauze tiles. These
tiles are heavy limestone slabs, hence they need the steeply pitched
timberwork roof in order to distribute the weight. The wealthier
houses, small towers and dovecotes tended to be constucted with this
type of roof. La Mamine is believed to be a hunting lodge associated
with Château Losse which is perched on a crag overlooking the
Vézère river just a few kilometres away. It is an
impressive building and well worth a visit.
From the outside La Mamine looks much the same as it would have done in
the 17th Century but inside it has been sympathetically restored to
create a spacious comfortable home whilst maintaining some of the
original internal features.
A few steps lead up to the front door which opens directly into a large
sitting room with a wood burning stove. To the right of this room the
main part of the house is effectively split onto three levels. The
kitchen/dining room is on the garden level and is well equipped with a
washing machine, dryer and dishwasher. Double doors from the kitchen
open onto the gravelled terrace with its garden furniture and the
private swimming pool is to be found to the right and slightly behind
this side of the house. From the kitchen an open plan staircase goes to
the first floor where there are two bedrooms each with a double bed.
One bedroom has it’s own ensuite shower, basin and WC. There is a
bathroom with basin and WC on the landing. A short flight of steeper
stairs lead up to the third twin bedded bedroom which is under the roof
space.
The small town of Thonac is only 3kms away where there are a couple of
restaurants and a small grocery shop. Main shopping is in Montignac,
only 7 kms further on. Montignac is a delightful market town on the
banks of the Vézère and has a good selection of
restaurants, supermarkets, butchers and bakers. There is so much to see
in this particular part of the Périgord Noir which is gentle and
dramatic by turns as the river winds its way through this lovely
valley. La Mamine is the ideal property from which to explore the
region and a haven of tranquillity to return to at the end of a
satisfying day.
